Residential care homes are residential homes that have been licensed by the California Department of Social Services. They provide all the same services as assisted living communities, but are smaller and range in size from 1 to 10 residents. They also provide a more intimate home like setting where the residents can enjoy a living room, backyard, kitchen/dining services which include three meals a day plus snacks and a private or shared bedroom.

These homes are in a residential neighborhood and usually provide assistance to the residents such as transferring from the bed or wheelchair, ambulating, meals, dressing, incontinence and personal hygiene.Their goal is to allow the elderly to "age in place" in a home environment.
